  17. <p>     For generations, men along the southern lip of the Black Sea
  18. have wagered their lives to dig the riches of coal. At 8 p.m.
  19. last Tuesday, 265 miners lost that gamble when a methane
  20. explosion bellowed from deep within the Incirharmani mine
  21. outside the city of Kozlu, instantly transforming miles of
  22. galleries into a subterranean conflagration of toxic gas.
  23. Rescuers pulled out 118 bodies before the inferno forced them
  24. to seal the passages with cinder blocks, entombing the remaining
  25. victims in the still burning mine.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     Incirharmani's safety equipment was rendered useless by
  28. the speed of the disaster: methane gas built up to critical
  29. levels in a mere 20 seconds, too fast for automatic detectors
  30. to signal the danger. Only last month, Ishak Alaton, an Istanbul
  31. businessman, petitioned the government to close the aging mine,
  32. where four previous explosions have claimed 107 lives since
  33. 1945. Said Alaton: "It is a savage way of exploiting human life
  34. and human health."
